What to Expect at an Internship Fair?

Hey everyone! I’m a sophomore in college and I’ll be attending my first internship fair tomorrow. As a first-generation student, I don’t have anyone to guide me through the process, so I’m reaching out for help. What can I expect when I get there? How do I approach the companies? Should I just walk up and say hi, or do they expect me to dive straight into my elevator pitch?

I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed, so I would greatly appreciate any advice you can share! Thank you!

  1. Hey there! It’s great that you’re taking the initiative to attend an internship fair. Here are some tips to help you navigate the event:

    1. Research Ahead of Time: If you can, look up the companies that will be there. Familiarize yourself with what they do and any specific internship opportunities they might have. This will help you feel more prepared when you approach them.

    2. Dress Professionally: Aim for business casual at the very least. First impressions matter!

    3. Prepare Your Elevator Pitch: You don’t have to dive into it immediately, but having a brief introduction ready can be helpful. Keep it around 30 seconds to 1 minute, and include your name, your major, what you’re interested in, and why you want to intern at that company.

    4. Practice Active Listening: When you approach a company booth, it’s fine to start with a simple greeting and introduce yourself. Then, ask questions about their internship program, the skills they’re looking for, or current projects. This shows genuine interest.

    5. Bring Copies of Your Resume: Hand them out when appropriate, and if they have a specific application process, ask about it.

    6. Network: Remember, the fair is also a great opportunity to connect with other students and professionals. Don’t hesitate to engage with others in line or in shared spaces.

    7. Follow Up: If you have meaningful conversations with recruiters, ask for their business cards, and consider sending a thank-you email after the fair to express your appreciation and reiterate your interest.

    8. Stay Positive: It’s normal to feel a bit nervous, especially if it’s your first time. Everyone is in the same boat, and most recruiters understand that you’re just starting your internship journey.

Remember, it’s okay to be yourself, and it’s an opportunity for you to learn as much as it is for them to learn about you. Good luck, and enjoy the experience!
