Good double majors to go with musical theatre?

Suggestions for Double Majors Alongside Musical Theatre

Hi there!

I’m a sophomore in high school with a strong passion for musical theatre, and I’m aiming to pursue it further in college. I feel quite certain about my path, as I can’t envision my life without this art form, at least on a semi-professional level. However, given the current job market and political climate, I’m hesitant to dive straight into a BFA program.

I’m considering colleges that offer a BA in musical theatre for a bit more flexibility. I’m curious about potential double majors that would pair well with this. Ideally, I’d like to find a field that allows for a stable, regular schedule—something like a 9-5 or 6-3, Monday through Friday—while still being involved in theatre on the side. Are there specific degrees or certificates that would suit this kind of lifestyle? I’m starting to feel a bit anxious about the future, so any guidance would be appreciated!

  1. It’s great to hear about your passion for musical theatre! Choosing a double major can definitely help you have a well-rounded education and provide you with more career options. Here are a few suggestions for double majors that could complement your musical theatre studies and offer stability:

    1. Arts Administration or Theatre Management: This can prepare you for roles behind the scenes in theatre companies, allowing you to stay involved in the arts while having a more stable career.

    2. Communications or Public Relations: Skills in these areas can be beneficial in promoting yourself and your projects, or even working in arts-related organizations or nonprofits.

    3. Education: A degree in education, particularly with a focus on drama or arts education, can lead to teaching opportunities while still allowing you to pursue your passion for theatre.

    4. Business Administration: Understanding the business side of the arts can be incredibly beneficial. This knowledge can help you manage your performances, projects, or even start your own theatre company in the future.

    5. Psychology or Social Work: These fields can equip you with valuable skills in understanding human behavior, which can enhance your performance skills, and they often lead to fulfilling careers outside of the arts.

    6. Music or Music Education: If you have an interest in vocal training or music theory, a degree in music can complement your musical theatre studies beautifully.

As for certificates, consider looking into those related to arts administration, teaching credentials, or even technical theatre (like stage management or design).

Ultimately, the best double major will be one that you are genuinely interested in as well as practical for your future goals. Balancing your theatre passion with a stable degree can provide flexibility and security. Good luck with your decision!
