What is the difference between main ceremony and department recognition event graduation ceremony

What’s the difference between the main graduation ceremony and the department recognition event?

I’m in the process of purchasing my cap and gown for the commencement ceremony in May, and I noticed there’s a choice to indicate whether I’ll be attending the main ceremony or the department recognition event. Can anyone explain how these two events differ? I attend one of the IU campuses, in case that’s relevant! Thanks!

  1. The main ceremony and department recognition event during graduation usually serve different purposes and audiences.

    1. Main Ceremony: This is typically a large, formal event that involves all graduating students from the university or campus. It may feature speeches from notable alumni, university officials, or guest speakers, and is usually held in a large venue. During this ceremony, degrees are conferred to graduates, often in a group setting, and it’s a more general celebration of the entire graduating class.

    2. Department Recognition Event: This event is usually smaller and more intimate, focused on individual departments or schools within the university. During this ceremony, graduates receive recognition specific to their field of study, and faculty members may speak about the achievements of the students in that department. Graduates may receive their diplomas or certificates from their department heads, and there may be more opportunities for personal recognition, such as individual awards.

Attending both events provides a comprehensive graduation experience, where you can celebrate with your entire university as well as receive recognition specific to your department. If you have the opportunity, it could be worthwhile to attend both!
