My Teacher Confisicated My Scissors

My Teacher Confiscated My Scissors

Hey everyone,

Today at school was a bit of a rollercoaster for me. As one of the more popular students among my peers and teachers, I was just heading out to recess when I realized I forgot to put my scissors away.

I was holding them safely, with the tips tucked into my hands, as I walked out the door. Then, suddenly, one of the strictest teachers in the school called my name. I approached her, and she asked why I had scissors in my hands, which is a typical question from teachers.

I replied, “Oh, sorry, I forgot to put them away.” She then said that if I handed them over, she would return them to my class.

I shrugged it off and continued with my day.

After recess, I went to her classroom to reclaim my scissors. She asked if I needed them for my next class, and I said yes since it was going to be art-related. She then escorted me down the hall to my classroom and informed my French teacher and my homeroom teacher that I was acting suspiciously with the scissors outside.

The French teacher started to say, “We probably won’t need scissors because it’s French…” but was cut off as the strict teacher announced to the whole class that I could talk to the principal or office at the end of the day to get my scissors back. My homeroom teacher looked at me differently after that.

She asked why I had them when she had instructed everyone to put their scissors away. For some context, my friend had borrowed my scissors, and when the bell rang, I ended up with them in my hand.

At the end of the day, I went to the office to ask the secretary, principal, and other staff about my scissors, but they were clueless. I then had to find the strict teacher, who, in front of two other teachers, asked if I was going to be doing arts and crafts today. I replied, “Maybe.” She then sarcastically told me that she no longer believed me and that I could talk to her again tomorrow morning.

It’s frustrating because every time she spoke to me, it was either in a sarcastic tone or just plain rude.

Is there any legal basis for this? Can I do anything about it? March Break starts tomorrow, and I fear this cycle will continue.

Apparently, she labeled the scissors as “dangerous weapons,” even though I was never threatening anyone. They’re pink safety scissors designed for kids aged 5-8!

Honestly, a simple warning would have sufficed, but the way she handled the situation feels a bit much.

Sorry for any grammar mistakes!

  1. It sounds like you had a really frustrating experience! It’s understandable to feel upset about how the situation was handled, especially since it seems like you were being responsible with the scissors. Teachers are certainly tasked with keeping students safe, but it also seems like there could have been a better way for her to address the situation, especially since you weren’t using the scissors inappropriately.

As for the legality of it, schools often have policies in place regarding weapons and dangerous items, but they should also consider context and intent. A pair of safety scissors used appropriately in a classroom setting shouldn’t be treated like a serious threat, especially since they were intended for arts and crafts.

If you feel comfortable, talking to a trusted teacher, counselor, or parent about your concerns might be a good step. They might be able to help advocate on your behalf or provide guidance on how to approach the situation. Just remember to remain calm and clear when you discuss this with anyone—you want to communicate that you understand the importance of safety, but also that you believe this was an unfair reaction.

Hopefully, things will be resolved soon, and you can enjoy your March Break free of this stress.
