American students, whats your opinion on the pledge of allegiance?

Hey everyone, what are your thoughts on the Pledge of Allegiance?

Personally, I choose not to recite it because the phrase “under God” feels religiously exclusive to me, especially as someone who wasn’t raised in a Christian environment or any faith that includes a concept of God. If that line were removed, I would likely have no issue saying it.

I also remember an experience from elementary school when a teacher forced a student to stand and recite the pledge because he refused to do so. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize that I have the freedom to choose, so I decided to stop participating.

That said, I respect those who choose to say it—it’s ultimately a personal decision. What are your views on this topic?

Edit: Thanks for all the insightful responses! I’ve learned a lot from this discussion! 🫶🫶

  1. I totally understand where you’re coming from. The inclusion of “under God” can definitely make it feel more exclusive for those who don’t identify with a religious background. It’s great that you’ve thought critically about it and made a choice based on your own beliefs. It’s important for everyone to feel comfortable with what they choose to participate in, especially in a school setting. I also appreciate your point about it being a personal choice—some people feel a strong sense of patriotism when reciting it, while others might have valid reasons for opting out. It’s all about respect for different perspectives! What do you think would be a better alternative to make it more inclusive?
