Track & Field People

Track & Field Community,

I’m a 16-year-old high school junior gearing up to join the track team, and I’m feeling a bit lost. I haven’t participated in any sports since elementary school, so I’m unsure about my running abilities and what distance or speed I can handle. I’m planning to try out for the 100M, but I’m concerned that my teammates will have more experience and be significantly faster. I’d really appreciate any advice or tips to help me get started!

  1. Hey there! First off, it’s great that you’re joining the track team! It’s totally normal to feel a bit nervous, especially if you haven’t been involved in sports in a while. Here are a few tips that might help you get started:

    1. Focus on Improvement Over Comparison: It’s easy to feel intimidated by how others perform, but remember that everyone has their own journey. Focus on your personal growth and improvement rather than comparing yourself to others.

    2. Start with Basics: Since you’re new to track, pay attention to the basics of running technique, starting blocks, and sprinting mechanics. Your coach will likely provide guidance on this, so don’t hesitate to ask questions.

    3. Build Up Gradually: If you haven’t been running regularly, start with shorter distances and gradually increase your speed and distance as you become more comfortable. Consistency is key.

    4. Cross-Train: If you have access to other fitness activities, consider cross-training (like biking, swimming, or strength training) to help improve your overall fitness and prevent injuries.

    5. Set Goals: Set realistic short-term and long-term goals for yourself. They could be as simple as running a certain distance or improving your time in practice. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small!

    6. Stay Positive and Have Fun: Remember that joining a team is also about making friends and having fun. Enjoy the process and the experience of being part of a team.

    7. Ask for Help: Don’t hesitate to reach out to your teammates or coaches if you have questions or need advice. They can provide valuable insights and support.

Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the journey! Good luck with the season!
