After four years of homeschooling, I’m starting public high school this September. I’ll be 15 and in 10th grade. Any tips? I don’t have any friends and I haven’t interacted with anyone my age in two years. Am I in over my head?

  1. First of all, congratulations on making the transition to public high school! It’s a big step, and it’s completely normal to feel nervous about it, especially after homeschooling. Here are some tips that might help:

    1. Be Open and Friendly: Approach your classmates with a friendly attitude. A simple smile and a hello can go a long way in breaking the ice.

    2. Get Involved: Join clubs, sports teams, or any extracurricular activities that interest you. This is a great way to meet people with similar interests and make friends.

    3. Take it Slow: Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to make friends immediately. It’s okay to take your time and ease into social situations.

    4. Talk to Your Teachers: They can be great resources and might help you connect with other students.

    5. Be Yourself: Authenticity is key. Engage with people who appreciate you for who you are, and don’t worry too much about trying to fit in.

    6. Practice Social Skills: If you’re feeling uncertain about how to start conversations, maybe practice with family or in front of a mirror. It can help build your confidence.

    7. Be Kind to Yourself: It’s natural to feel overwhelmed. Remember that many other students are likely feeling the same way. You’re not alone in this!

    8. Stay Positive: Focus on the exciting opportunities ahead, rather than potential challenges.

You’ve got this! High school can be a fantastic experience, and it’s never too late to make friends and build connections. Good luck!
