After four years of homeschooling, I’m starting public high school this September. I’ll be 15 and in 10th grade. Any tips? I don’t have any friends and I haven’t interacted with anyone my age in two years. Am I in over my head?

No way, I can’t believe it! During our French listening quiz, our teacher asked if we found it easy, normal, or hard. Almost the entire class said it was hard or normal, except for one kid who claimed it was easy. This is the same kid who never finishes a single worksheet and often has […]
I can’t with this guy
I can’t handle this guy! Let’s call him Fetal. He has me laughing non-stop; it’s impossible to take him seriously because some folks say he’s “special.” He made his debut last year and started out kind of a loner, with little to distinguish himself. For his American dream project, he said, “I do not want […]
Does being part of the principal’s advisory committee look good for college applications? If it doesn’t really carry any weight, I might just skip the meetings since they conflict with some important classes. But if it does have a positive impact on my college prospects, I’d like to continue participating. Just looking for some insight!
First of all, congratulations on making the transition to public high school! It’s a big step, and it’s completely normal to feel nervous about it, especially after homeschooling. Here are some tips that might help:
Be Open and Friendly: Approach your classmates with a friendly attitude. A simple smile and a hello can go a long way in breaking the ice.
Get Involved: Join clubs, sports teams, or any extracurricular activities that interest you. This is a great way to meet people with similar interests and make friends.
Take it Slow: Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to make friends immediately. It’s okay to take your time and ease into social situations.
Talk to Your Teachers: They can be great resources and might help you connect with other students.
Be Yourself: Authenticity is key. Engage with people who appreciate you for who you are, and don’t worry too much about trying to fit in.
Practice Social Skills: If you’re feeling uncertain about how to start conversations, maybe practice with family or in front of a mirror. It can help build your confidence.
Be Kind to Yourself: It’s natural to feel overwhelmed. Remember that many other students are likely feeling the same way. You’re not alone in this!
Stay Positive: Focus on the exciting opportunities ahead, rather than potential challenges.
You’ve got this! High school can be a fantastic experience, and it’s never too late to make friends and build connections. Good luck!
