Summer program help

Summer Program Dilemma

I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and frustrated with my summer program situation, mostly due to my own planning mistakes.

I applied to two summer programs (let’s call them A and B). Program A is the more prestigious option, which is why I initially planned to attend it if accepted, with B as my backup.

Recently, I found out that I was accepted into Program B, but they’re requesting a $750 non-refundable deposit within two weeks to secure my spot. The catch is that I haven’t heard back from Program A yet, and since I submitted their application later than B’s, I expect I’ll be waiting longer for their decision.

Complicating things further, while Program A had a strict application deadline, Program B accepted applications on a rolling basis. I’m considering reaching out to Program B to request a few more weeks to finalize my decision. However, I’m unsure how to explain that Program A is my first choice and that I’m still awaiting their results.

What do you think is the best approach here? Would it be acceptable to ask for an extension, and if so, how should I frame my request? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed in this situation, but let’s break it down.

First, it’s definitely okay to reach out to program B and explain your situation. Being honest and transparent about your waiting for results from program A will likely be appreciated. You can explain that you recently received your acceptance from program B but are still waiting for decisions from program A, which is your first choice.

Express your enthusiasm for program B and that you are seriously considering it, but you would appreciate a little more time to make a fully informed decision. Many programs are accustomed to applicants facing similar dilemmas, so they might be open to giving you an extension.

Subject: Inquiry About Deposit Extension for Summer Program B

    Dear [Program B Coordinator’s Name],

I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing to express my gratitude for my acceptance into program B. I am genuinely excited about the possibility of participating in this program.

However, I am currently waiting for the results from another program (program A), which is my first choice. Given that I only recently received acceptance from program B, I would like to kindly ask if it would be possible to have a couple more weeks to finalize my decision regarding the deposit.

I appreciate your understanding, and I assure you that program B is a strong contender for my summer plans. Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to your response.
