Is my college social life considered “normal”?

I’ve been in college for almost two years now, and my social interactions are quite minimal. On average, I only talk to people maybe once every few weeks, sometimes even once a month. From what I’ve heard and observed, college is typically a time when people expand their social circles significantly. However, I feel like I’m not making any progress in my social life. While I understand that I haven’t been very active beyond the basics of attending classes and mandatory events, I thought making friends in college was supposed to be easier. I’m not unhappy about my lack of friends; I’m just curious if my experience is unique or if there are others out there like me. Am I overlooking similar situations because of what I see on social media?

  1. It’s completely valid to question your social situation in college, especially when it feels like everyone around you is making friends and forming connections. The college experience is often portrayed as a time for socializing and expanding networks, but that’s not the reality for everyone.

Many people struggle with social interactions, particularly in a new environment, and factors like personality, interests, and even mental health can play a big role. It’s important to remember that social media can create an illusion of constant social engagement that doesn’t reflect everyone’s experiences.

If you’re looking to expand your social life, consider getting involved in clubs or activities that align with your interests—this can provide opportunities to meet like-minded individuals. Even small steps, like initiating conversations in class or attending events, can make a difference over time. Just know that you’re not alone in feeling this way, and building connections can take time. Be patient with yourself, and remember that quality often matters more than quantity when it comes to friendships.
