I can’t complete my foreign language requirement (A&S)

Subject: Struggling with My Language Requirement

I’m feeling really stuck with my foreign language requirement for my A&S degree. I only need one more semester of Latin to graduate, but I’m having a hard time. I usually pick up languages quickly at first, but when it comes to putting everything together, I struggle. The overwhelming content makes my anxiety kick in, and I freeze up during participation—especially when I know my translations are off. This is why I didn’t continue with Spanish after two years in high school and switched to German for two semesters at community college instead of focusing on one language consistently.

I had to drop this class last year, and it feels like I’m facing the same situation again. Passing seems almost impossible now, and waiting a whole year to try again isn’t an option for me. Is it really going to come down to not earning my Biology degree because of a single semester of Latin? It feels so frustrating and discouraging.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed, especially when it comes to something as challenging as learning a new language. It’s important to remember that you’re not alone in this, and there are resources and options available that might help you get through the language requirement.

Have you considered speaking to an academic advisor or a counselor at your school? They might have suggestions for alternative ways to fulfill your requirement or could help you find tutoring resources specifically for Latin. Sometimes, just getting a little extra support can make a huge difference.

It’s also worth exploring if there are any accommodations or support services for students with anxiety. Many schools have programs in place to help students like you succeed in challenging subjects.

Remember, your journey is unique, and needing extra help doesn’t make you pathetic at all—it shows strength to recognize when you need support. Keep going; you’re closer to your degree than you think!
