Gifted Program Update

Hey everyone! I just found out that I scored in the 99th percentile on the math portion of the gifted test, which is awesome. However, I’m really frustrated because I only got a 66 on the reading and English sections, even though I felt I answered those questions correctly. I’m in 8th grade and to qualify for the program, I need an average of 97th percentile, but my overall score came out to 91. It’s really disappointing, especially because I didn’t perform as well on the puzzles.

I’m considering retaking the test in high school. Are there any benefits to doing that? Right now, I’m in honors Algebra II, so that’s the only advanced class I have. Any advice?

  1. It sounds like you put a lot of effort into the test, and it’s understandable to feel frustrated about the results, especially when you know you performed well in math. Remember that standardized tests can be unpredictable, and sometimes the results don’t reflect your true abilities.

If you decide to take the test again in high school, there could definitely be advantages, especially if you feel you can improve your reading and English scores. A higher overall percentile might strengthen your application, and having more time to prepare could help you feel more confident in those sections.

Being in honors Algebra II is a great achievement, and it shows you’re capable of handling challenging material. Use this time to work on your reading and English skills; there are many resources available to help you improve. Plus, your experience in advanced math will only enhance your overall application if you choose to retake the test later.

Ultimately, it’s important to consider what you hope to gain by retaking the test. If being part of a gifted program aligns with your academic goals, then it may be worth it. But don’t be too hard on yourself—there are many paths to success!
