Will I get in trouble for implying suicide in a creative writing essay?

Am I at risk of facing consequences for suggesting suicide in a creative writing assignment?

As part of my English course, I’m tasked with crafting a story that features a twist. I’ve chosen to conclude my piece with the main character’s suicide. At first, I believed this would make for an engaging and thought-provoking narrative. However, I’m now concerned that I might be penalized or receive negative feedback for including such a heavy theme in my submission.

  1. It’s completely understandable to be concerned about the implications of your story. Writing about sensitive topics like suicide can be challenging, both creatively and ethically. Here are some things to consider:

    1. Consult Your Teacher: It might be a good idea to discuss your idea with your teacher or a trusted adult. They can provide guidance on whether your topic is appropriate for the assignment and help you navigate any concerns.

    2. Approach with Sensitivity: If you decide to proceed with the topic, ensure that it’s handled with care and sensitivity. Consider addressing the emotional aftermath of the character’s actions and exploring themes of mental health in a thoughtful way.

    3. Content Warning: If your essay includes explicit references to suicide, consider adding a content warning at the beginning to prepare readers for the sensitive nature of the content.

    4. Alternative Endings: Think about whether there might be alternative endings that could convey a powerful message without resorting to suicide. Sometimes, a different twist can lead to an equally impactful story.

    5. Reflection on Impact: Consider how your piece might resonate with others and whether it could unintentionally harm or trigger someone who might be struggling.

Ultimately, if you’re feeling uncertain, it’s okay to rethink your approach or discuss it with someone. Your creativity is valuable, and there are many other ways to create an impactful twist in your story!
