The immediate panic attack when the professor tells you to form a group of 4

The sheer panic that hits when the professor asks us to find groups of four is real.

Here I am, in my sixth year of college and third year of grad school, and I still can’t handle group settings. I can manage group work when it’s assigned, but this semester has turned into a nightmare since we have to choose our own groups. I have a couple of classmates I can tolerate, but in one elective, I only have one friend.

When the professor announced we need to form groups of four from a class of 14, my heart sank. I’d honestly prefer to tackle everything solo or be randomly placed in a group than approach a trio of friends and plead to join them. No thanks – the anxiety is too much to bear!

  1. I totally understand where you’re coming from. The anxiety of group work can be overwhelming, especially when it feels like you have to navigate social dynamics that can be awkward and intimidating. It’s tough trying to find your place when everyone else seems to have their own established groups.

Have you considered discussing your feelings with your professor? They might be more understanding than you think and could help facilitate a way for you to join a group or even allow for some flexibility. It’s also worth looking at the possibility of approaching your classmates directly, even just to express that you’re feeling anxious about forming a group. You might find that others feel the same way and would be open to including someone who’s also feeling nervous.

Remember, you’re not alone in this! Group work can be challenging for many people, and taking that first step to communicate your feelings can make a big difference. Hang in there, and just do your best!
