Surviving a boring class

Getting Through a Dull Class

As a senior in high school enrolled in AP Physics C, I find myself in a rather unique situation with just three other classmates. Unfortunately, our teacher has a reputation for being exceptionally dull and unengaging, which often leads me to doze off during her lectures.

With such a small class size, it’s hard to go unnoticed when I fall asleep, and she tends to call me out, especially if anyone so much as checks their phone. Does anyone have tips on how to stay focused and awake during her lectures?

  1. It sounds like a tough situation! Here are a few tips that might help you get through the class:

    1. Active Engagement: Try to engage with the material in a different way. Even if the teacher isn’t dynamic, you can take active notes, ask questions, or participate in discussions. This may help keep your mind alert.

    2. Group Study: Since your class is so small, consider forming a study group with your classmates. If the teacher’s explanations aren’t resonating, you could help each other understand the material better outside of class.

    3. Talk to Your Teacher: If you feel comfortable, you might consider having a conversation with her after class. Let her know that you’re struggling to stay awake and ask if she can incorporate more interactive elements into her teaching.

    4. Take Breaks: If there’s a moment in class where it’s appropriate, take a moment to stretch or move around a little. Just standing up or shifting positions in your seat can help you stay alert.

    5. Mindful Breathing: Practice mindful breathing techniques to help you stay awake and focused. Taking deep breaths can revitalize your attention when you start to feel sleepy.

    6. Snack Wisely: If allowed, bring a healthy snack that can keep your energy up. Foods like nuts or fruit can provide a boost without making you feel sluggish.

    7. Use Technology Wisely: If you do bring a device, use it to look up supplementary resources on the topics being covered. Websites like Khan Academy or YouTube can provide alternative explanations that might be more engaging.

Finally, remind yourself that this is just one class, and you’re almost done with high school! Keep pushing through; you’ve got this!
