when is it too late to start studying medicine

Is it ever too late to pursue a career in medicine?

I’m sharing this here because I don’t have enough karma to post in r/medicine. I’m currently 16 and planning to study film and theatre in college next year (we start at 16 in the UK). I’ve always said that if acting doesn’t work out, I’d consider going into medicine. However, I’m concerned about starting this path at the age of 27. I understand that it’s a long process, and I would need to study subjects like math, biology, and chemistry in sixth form, which is done at 16. So, I’m wondering if it’s feasible to pursue medicine later on in life. Any insights would be appreciated!

  1. It’s definitely possible to start studying medicine later in life, even in your late 20s or beyond. Many medical schools value diverse backgrounds and life experiences, and there are numerous pathways to get there. If you decide to pursue medicine after exploring film and theatre, you can take the necessary science courses, such as biology, chemistry, and math, either through a formal program or through self-study.

While the process of becoming a doctor can be lengthy and challenging, many people have successfully made the transition from other fields into medicine, often bringing unique perspectives and skills with them. Just make sure to research the entry requirements for the medical schools you’re interested in, as they can vary.

Ultimately, if medicine is something you feel passionate about, it’s never too late to start working towards that goal! Focus on what you love now, and keep the option for medicine open if you feel drawn to it later. Good luck!
