I have a *crippling* fear of school shootings

I have a deep-seated fear of school shootings. Recently, I’ve been feeling overwhelmed by anxiety about the possibility of violence at school. Many nights, I find myself in tears at the thought of going to school the next day, as I can’t shake the feeling that something terrible might happen. The sound of fire alarms triggers my fears, making me worry that a shooter is trying to lure us out of our classrooms. I tense up with every announcement, dreading the possibility of a lockdown. It’s hard for me to concentrate during lectures when I don’t feel like I have a quick and safe escape route from where I am.

Is anyone else experiencing this? If so, do you have any strategies or affirmations that help you cope? I genuinely enjoy school, and it’s disheartening that I can’t feel completely safe there.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. It’s completely understandable to have fears, especially with everything that’s been happening in the world. You’re definitely not alone in feeling anxious about school safety. Many people share your concerns, and it’s important to acknowledge how you feel.

One thing that might help is to talk to someone you trust about your feelings, whether it’s a friend, family member, or school counselor. Sometimes just expressing your worries can lighten the load a bit. Have you considered finding strategies to cope with your anxiety? For example, practicing mindfulness or breathing exercises can help you ground yourself in the moment when those feelings of fear arise.

Also, knowing that your school likely has safety protocols in place can help. Understanding those procedures and discussing them with someone you trust can sometimes ease your mind. It might also be helpful to create a mental safety plan for yourself, so you feel more prepared and in control.

Remember, it’s completely okay to seek support, and there are people who can help you navigate these feelings. You deserve to feel safe and enjoy your time at school.

Has anyone else noticed kids at school suddenly wearing suits out of nowhere? In previous years, I’d typically spot just one or two students dressed up for special events, Halloween, or Spirit Day.
