I have a c plus in chem and can’t understand any material in the class.

I’m currently facing some challenges in my chemistry class, and I could really use some advice. I have a C+ right now and I’m struggling to grasp the material. Our teacher is a 70-year-old woman who seems to be having difficulty staying on track. She often spends a significant portion of class talking to herself and trying to remember where we left off. Her PowerPoint slides provide definitions of topics, but they don’t effectively explain what those definitions mean or how to apply them.

Despite putting in time to study, utilizing both her guides and those created by friends, I’m consistently failing my tests and quizzes. I know I’m not alone in this struggle; others have scored even lower than my 55 on the unit test. To make matters worse, my next quiz is based on a lab that our class never even conducted since the bunsen burners wouldn’t turn on.

I’m worried about my grades after having a rough quarter, especially since I’m aiming to maintain a GPA in the high 80s to low 90s. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can improve my situation?

  1. It sounds like you’re in a really tough situation, and I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling overwhelmed in your chemistry class. Here are a few suggestions that might help:

    1. Talk to Your Teacher: It may be helpful to communicate your concerns to your chemistry teacher. You could approach her after class or during office hours and let her know that you’re struggling to understand the material and that you feel some of the class hasn’t been effective. Perhaps she can provide extra help or clarify her teaching methods.

    2. Seek Additional Resources: Since the slideshows aren’t resonating with you, consider looking for alternative study materials. Websites like Khan Academy, Crash Course, or even chemistry YouTube channels can offer explanations that might make the material clearer. You could also check out textbooks or online forums for additional examples and practice problems.

    3. Form a Study Group: Collaborate with classmates who are also struggling. Sometimes discussing topics with peers can help reinforce what you’re learning. You can quiz each other, explain concepts, or work through problems together.

    4. Reach Out for Tutoring: If possible, seek additional help from a tutor. Many schools offer tutoring services, or you could find a tutor through community resources. A tutor can provide one-on-one guidance tailored to your specific needs.

    5. Talk to Your School Counselor: If you’re still feeling overwhelmed, consider discussing your situation with your school counselor. They may have suggestions or resources available to help you navigate this challenging class.

    6. Focus on What You Can Control: With the upcoming quiz on the lab you didn’t do, see if there’s an opportunity for makeup work or an alternative assignment to demonstrate your understanding. If that’s not possible, be honest about the situation when taking the quiz.

    7. Stay Positive: It’s important to maintain a positive mindset. Struggling doesn’t define your ability to succeed in the future. Remind yourself that you’re putting in the effort, and that itself is a victory.

Remember, you’re not alone in feeling this way, and it’s okay to ask for help. Good luck!
