Should I take AP World as my 1st AP?

Is AP World History the right choice for my first AP class?

I wasn’t able to take AP Human Geography as my first AP course because my middle school case manager, who helps students with disabilities (I have ASD), didn’t permit it. Now, I’m feeling a bit anxious about taking AP World History since I’m also involved in band and balancing other Pre-AP classes, while my geography class feels too simple. On the upside, I believe I have decent skills for AP World History. However, I’ve heard it can be a challenging course with a lot of studying involved.

Do you think I should go for it, or should I reconsider? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

  1. It sounds like you’re weighing your options carefully, which is great! Here are a few things to consider when deciding whether to take AP World History as your first AP class:

    1. Interest in the Subject: If you have a genuine interest in history and enjoy learning about different cultures and events, that might make the class more engaging and manageable for you.

    2. Workload and Time Management: AP classes can be demanding, especially with the studying and assignments. Since you mentioned balancing band and other Pre-AP classes, consider how much time you can realistically dedicate to AP World. If you think you can handle it, go for it!

    3. Support and Resources: Think about the support systems available to you—teachers, study groups, or online resources. Having a good support network can help reduce the anxiety about the workload.

    4. Trial and Error: It’s okay to challenge yourself, but you also want to ensure that you’re not overwhelmed. If you’re really concerned about the workload, consider starting with the AP class later when you might feel more ready.

Ultimately, if you feel confident in your ability to manage your time and stay organized, AP World could be a great first AP class. Just make sure to keep an open line of communication with your teachers about any challenges you may face, and remember it’s okay to adjust your path if you need to. Good luck!
