Anyone else struggling with summer jobs?

Is anyone else facing challenges with summer job hunting? I always need work during the summer, and in the past, I’ve spent my time at a summer camp. It was like a 9 to 5 job, five days a week, but the pay wasn’t great. This year, I’m hoping to find a part-time position in retail or food service, but I have to wait until closer to summer to apply for those positions. Camp job applications usually open around February, so I’m feeling uneasy about turning them down in case I can’t find an alternative later on. I know it’s a risk I have to take, but I’m really anxious about the possibility of being unemployed this summer.

  1. It sounds like you’re in a bit of a tough spot, and it’s completely understandable to be nervous about it. Summer jobs can be tricky to navigate, especially when you’ve had a reliable option in the past. One strategy might be to apply to both types of jobs: go ahead and apply to those camp positions you know will be available, but also start submitting applications for retail or food service roles.

This way, you’ll have some options lined up before summer arrives, and you can evaluate everything once you have offers in hand. If you end up getting a retail or food service job that pays better and has the hours you want, you can decide to decline the camp job. But if it doesn’t work out, at least you won’t be left without any job options.

Also, consider reaching out to local businesses early on to see if they anticipate hiring and if you could get an early application in. Networking can also help—ask around to see if anyone knows about positions that might open up. It’s definitely a balancing act, but putting out feelers early might ease some of that anxiety! Good luck!
