Saying goodbye to my siblings
As I prepare for college next year, I can’t shake the thought of leaving my siblings behind. I’m the oldest of three—my younger brother is just a year younger than me, while my little sister is ten years my junior. The idea of leaving her is particularly tough for me. It’s completely understandable to feel this way as you prepare to leave for college. Being the oldest sibling comes with a special bond and a sense of responsibility, especially to your younger siblings. Here are some thoughts on how you might cope with this transition:
Stay Connected: Plan regular video calls or phone chats with them. You can even schedule weekly “family nights” where you can all watch a movie together or play online games.
Create Memories: Spend as much quality time with them as you can before you leave. Take them out for ice cream, have a fun day at the park, or just hang out at home doing things you all enjoy.
Leave Notes or Gifts: Consider leaving them little notes or small gifts that they can open when they miss you. It’s a tangible way for them to feel your presence even when you’re away.
Focus on Your Growth: Understand that going to college is an exciting opportunity for you. Remind yourself that your growth will ultimately benefit your siblings as well, as you’ll have more experiences and knowledge to share with them.
Talk About Your Feelings: Share your feelings with your siblings. They might be feeling similar emotions, and talking about it can help both of you cope with the change.
Plan Visits: Make sure to plan visits home if possible. Knowing when you’ll be back can make the distance feel less daunting.
Remember, it’s okay to feel sad about leaving, but this is also a new chapter full of opportunities. Lean on your friends and family for support, and focus on the positive aspects of your new journey.
