Self studying my favourite subject Psychology instead of majoring in it

Studying Psychology on My Own Instead of Choosing It as My Major

Right now, I’m pursuing a major in math and statistics, as it opens up opportunities for careers like financial or business analysis. While I have a genuine passion for psychology, many people advise following your passion; the job market for psychology isn’t as strong. I’m currently reading an introductory psychology textbook, and I’m enjoying it, but I can’t shake the feeling that it lacks the same level of rigor as a formal major. On the bright side, I’m having a great time with math and statistics!

  1. It’s great that you’re pursuing a math and statistics major, especially since it can lead to solid job opportunities in fields like finance and business analysis. Your approach of self-studying psychology is a fantastic way to keep your passion alive! While it’s true that majoring in psychology might offer a different level of rigour, your self-study can still provide valuable insights and knowledge. Plus, having a strong foundation in math can actually complement your interest in psychology, especially in areas like data analysis and research methods.

By combining both disciplines, you might find unique career paths that merge psychology and analytics, such as market research or user experience design. Following your passion doesn’t mean you have to change your major; you can explore psychology alongside your studies, participating in related clubs or online courses. Ultimately, it’s about finding a balance that fulfills you academically and professionally. Keep enjoying your reading, and don’t hesitate to blend both interests whenever you can!
