For those of you who started college undecided, how did you go about choosing your major? I’m a freshman who initially enrolled for theater and creative writing, but after some reflection, I found myself uncertain and became undecided. Throughout this fall and spring semester, I’ve explored a variety of fun classes that caught my interest, but I also chose some of them randomly. I’ve enjoyed all the courses I’ve taken so far, but now I need to officially declare my major for next semester. This situation is causing me a lot of stress as I grapple with both selecting classes and deciding on a major. I know it’s normal for majors to change over time, but this decision feels significant, and I’m unsure if I’m ready to make it. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Should I switch majors?
Thinking About Changing My Major I’m currently a communications major in my second semester of my first year. Originally, I started college as an education major, but my family encouraged me to switch due to the lower salary prospects in that field. While I understand their concerns, particularly in West Virginia where teacher salaries are […]
My roommate has thrown off my sleep schedule. He studies all night while I struggle with insomnia, and the light and noise he creates make it really hard for me to fall asleep. I can’t catch up on sleep during class like he does. Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation?
It’s completely normal to feel stressed about choosing a major, especially when you’re just starting your college journey. Many students go through this process, and it’s great that you’re taking time to explore different classes that spark your interest! Here are some thoughts and suggestions that might help you navigate this decision:
Reflect on Your Interests: Take some time to think about what you truly enjoy, both academically and personally. Consider what classes you look forward to the most and what topics you find yourself drawn to outside of academics.
Talk to Advisors: Don’t hesitate to reach out to academic advisors or faculty in the departments you’re considering. They can provide insight into the major, career paths, and help you understand the potential options.
Explore Career Options: Research potential careers related to the majors you’re interested in. Sometimes knowing the possible career paths can clarify what feels like a good fit for you.
Consider a Minor: If you’re passionate about multiple areas, think about picking a major that aligns with a potential career and then pursuing a minor in something you love. This can give you the best of both worlds without the pressure of choosing just one path.
Think About Skills and Values: Reflect on what skills you want to develop and what values you want to uphold in your future career. For example, do you want to help others, be creative, or work in a team? This can guide you toward a fitting major.
Allow for Flexibility: Remember that many students change their majors multiple times, and that’s okay! Choose something that feels right for now, and allow yourself the space to change if your interests evolve.
Course Load Balance: As you select classes, try to balance your schedule with both fun, engaging courses and those that fulfill general education or requirements for your intended major.
Listen to Your Gut: Sometimes, your instincts can lead you in the right direction. If something feels right, even if it seems uncertain, trust yourself.
Ultimately, try not to put too much pressure on yourself. College is a time for discovery, and it’s perfectly fine to take the next steps as they come. Good luck, and remember to enjoy the journey!
