I can’t complete my foreign language requirement (A&S)

Struggling with the Foreign Language Requirement (A&S)

I’m facing a challenge with my foreign language requirement for graduation. I only need one more semester of Latin, but I can’t seem to make it work. I typically grasp languages well at first, but when it comes to putting everything together, I struggle. The overall content feels overwhelming, and my severe anxiety makes it even harder to participate, especially when I know my translations are off. That’s why I only took two years of Spanish in high school and switched to two semesters of German at community college instead of committing to one language. I dropped this class last year, and now I’m finding myself in the same situation this year. It feels nearly impossible to pass at this point, and having to wait a whole year to try again isn’t an option. Is it really possible that I might not earn my Biology degree simply because of one semester of Latin? It feels frustrating and disheartening.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. It sounds like you’re in a really tough spot, and it’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed, especially when dealing with anxiety. Remember, it’s not pathetic to struggle with something that many people find challenging—language learning can be hard for a lot of folks!

Have you considered reaching out to your academic advisor or the professor of your Latin class? They might be able to offer some accommodations or alternative options to help you meet your requirement. You could also look into language support resources offered by your school, like tutoring or study groups, which might make the material feel less daunting.

Most importantly, take care of yourself and remember that your mental health is a priority. There’s no shame in seeking help or finding alternative paths to graduation. You’ve come this far in your studies, and there are ways to navigate this challenge!
