Mom making me feel like shit for switching majors

Feeling Guilt Over Switching Majors

I’m struggling with my decision to switch my major from cyber security to game design and animation, and my mom isn’t making it any easier. I was really unhappy studying cyber security; I couldn’t handle the work and felt depressed every day. When I tried to explain this to her, she dismissed my feelings, saying, “You’re not depressed, you’re just lazy.” It’s exhausting.

To make matters worse, she’s been telling her friends that I “gave up” on cyber security, and they’ve been agreeing with her, which just adds to my frustration. She also keeps bringing up the financial aspect, reminding me that the cyber security program was funded through a previous program and questioning how I’ll pay for my new choice.

Honestly, I’m feeling pretty down about the whole situation. The only support I have comes from my friends. I might be able to get financial aid through FAFSA, but it’s not guaranteed. I’m at a crossroads: should I pursue what I’m passionate about and ignore my mom’s opinions, or do I need to consider her perspective?

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re going through this. It’s tough when those close to us don’t understand our struggles or support our decisions. It sounds like you’ve put a lot of thought into this switch and are prioritizing your happiness and mental health, which is so important.

Here are a few things to consider:

    1. Focus on Yourself: Ultimately, your education and career path should reflect what you want and what makes you happy. If game design/animation excites you, that’s what matters most.

    2. Communicate: If you feel up to it, try having another conversation with your mom. Share your passion for game design and explain that it aligns more with your interests and skills. Sometimes, people need a little more context to understand your choices.

    3. Seek Support: Continue leaning on your friends who support you. Surround yourself with people who uplift you and understand your journey. This positive reinforcement can help combat the negativity from your mom.

    4. Financial Considerations: Look into the financial aspects carefully. If FAFSA can help, research what you need to do to make that work. You might also find scholarships or grants specific to game design.

    5. Set Boundaries: If your mom continues to make you feel bad about your decision, it might help to set boundaries. You don’t have to engage in conversations that leave you feeling upset.

    6. Take Your Time: Remember, switching majors is a big decision, but it’s not the end of the world. Many people change their paths, and it can lead to better opportunities in the long run.

At the end of the day, this is your life and your future. Trust your instincts and choose a path that makes you excited to get up in the morning. You’ve got this!
