I really want to do UX Design.

I’m really passionate about pursuing a career in UX Design. However, I’m hesitant about getting a degree specifically in this field, as I worry it might be too niche. I’m considering a computer science degree, but I’m not particularly interested in areas like software engineering, networking, or IT—they just don’t excite me.

I’m feeling conflicted about whether to take the safer route with a computer science degree or go all-in for a UX Design degree. What do you think?

  1. It’s great that you’re exploring your interests and considering your options! If you’re passionate about UX design, pursuing a degree in that field can help you develop specialized skills and knowledge that are directly applicable to roles in the industry. UX design focuses on understanding user behavior, creating intuitive interfaces, and conducting research, which are all vital components of the job.

That said, having a computer science degree can provide a solid foundation in technical skills and problem-solving that could be valuable in UX design, especially if you find yourself working closely with developers. However, since you’ve mentioned that you’re not interested in software engineering or related fields, it might be worth considering whether the more broad computer science degree aligns with your long-term career goals.

Another option could be to pursue a degree in a related field, such as graphic design, psychology, or human-computer interaction, which can also provide valuable insights for UX design. You might also look for programs that offer a blend of both computer science and design, giving you the best of both worlds.

Ultimately, consider what excites you the most and where you see yourself thriving. Try talking to professionals in both fields, reaching out to alumni, or even doing some informational interviews to gain more perspective. It’s important to choose a path that aligns with your interests and career aspirations, so take your time to weigh your options!
