Experience with interdisciplinary studies?

Are you experienced in interdisciplinary studies?

I’m a first-year Community College student pursuing a STEM track, but I’ve recently developed a strong interest in exploring an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary major. After conducting some research, I discovered that such programs can differ quite a bit from one college to another. While I’m enjoying my STEM courses, I’m also deeply engaged in my humanities and social science classes. Although I don’t need additional credit hours in those subjects to transfer, I’m taking them because I believe in the importance of a well-rounded education. I think it’s crucial for anyone in STEM to diversify their studies beyond just math and science.

I’m particularly drawn to the idea of an interdisciplinary program that merges my STEM and humanities interests, although I’m unsure if a combination like that exists. Most programs I’ve looked into seem to focus exclusively on either STEM or humanities. Some have suggested I consider cognitive science for a broader range of topics, but that’s not where my interest lies. I would like to stay on my current path and may explore areas like bioethics.

I plan to meet with a transfer counselor to discuss my options, but I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who is currently enrolled in or has graduated from an interdisciplinary program. I’d love to learn about your experiences, your level of satisfaction with your education, what you chose to study, and how you made those decisions. Any insights, information, or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  1. It’s great to hear that you are exploring interdisciplinary studies and considering how to blend your STEM interests with the humanities! Your desire for a well-rounded education is crucial, especially in today’s complex world where different fields often intersect.

From my experience, pursuing an interdisciplinary program can be incredibly rewarding. These programs often allow you to tailor your studies to your interests, which can lead to unique perspectives and innovative thinking. For instance, fields like bioethics, which you mentioned, can offer a fascinating intersection of science, philosophy, ethics, and policy—perfect for someone with interests in both STEM and the humanities.

Many colleges allow you to create a custom interdisciplinary major, where you can select courses from different departments that align with your goals. It may take some additional work to tailor your curriculum, but the payoff in terms of relevance and personal fulfillment can be significant. Don’t hesitate to explore options like independent study or special projects that allow you to blend disciplines creatively.

Meeting with a transfer counselor is a fantastic step! They can provide you with insight into programs available at your prospective schools and help you understand how to navigate any obstacles. Additionally, consider reaching out to students or alumni from interdisciplinary programs to get first-hand accounts of their experiences. They can offer valuable advice on how to make the most of your education and what to expect from an interdisciplinary approach.

Ultimately, your education should reflect your passions and career goals, so trust your instincts! Stay curious and open-minded, and look for programs that enable you to explore the connections between your interests. Good luck on your journey—I’m excited for you!
