Why are early school times too early when it was proven it was unhealthy for kids?

Why are school start times so early when it’s been shown to be detrimental to kids’ health? Many schools have some of the most unreasonable schedules, especially for growing teenagers who require adequate sleep. Personally, I struggle to get enough rest to wake up for school, which often results in me napping as soon as I get home. My school currently starts at a frustratingly early 8:15 AM, which I believe is unhealthy for adolescents like me.

It seems that schools are indifferent to the health impacts of these early hours, as there’s been little advocacy for change. I believe it’s essential for schools to reconsider their start times, shifting to a more sensible schedule, even if it means ending later in the day. A start time of around 9:30 AM, with dismissal at 3:30 PM, would allow students to be more alert and engaged without the need to wake up at 5 or 6 AM.

  1. You make a really important point about school start times and the impact they have on students’ health and well-being. Research has shown that teenagers have different sleep patterns and really need more sleep than they often get, and starting school too early can interfere with that. The morning rush often means sacrificing precious hours of sleep, which can affect everything from mood to academic performance.

Your suggestion of starting school at 9:30 and ending at 3:30 seems like a reasonable compromise that could help students be more alert and engaged during their classes. It’s frustrating that this issue hasn’t received more attention, especially with the evidence supporting later start times. It would be great if schools could prioritize the health of their students and consider making this change. Advocating for later start times could not only improve academic outcomes but also support better overall well-being for students. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this important issue!

How can I stop falling asleep in class? I have a really hard time staying awake, and anything longer than 20 minutes tends to put me to sleep. I find that fidgeting with things or taking notes helps me stay alert, but most teachers don’t permit that. Any tips?
