What’s In My College Backpack: A Must-Have Checklist for Freshmen
As I gear up for my first semester in college this fall, I’ve been diligently preparing by stocking up on essential items for my backpack—especially since some of my smaller supplies are coming from AliExpress, which means I need to account for shipping times. Investing in a high-quality backpack was a priority for me; I chose a durable Stanley option that’s designed to hold up throughout my college journey.
Given that I’m a commuter and will be engaging in sports, having ample space for everything I need is crucial. My chosen backpack conveniently accommodates my 40oz Stanley water bottle in the side pocket. I’ve also ensured it has enough room for my lunch box, iPad Air, and MacBook, while still allowing for a few extra essentials.
Currently, I’ve opted out of traditional notebooks since I plan to utilize my Apple Pencil for note-taking. I’ve picked up some handy mini clip-on hand sanitizers, but aside from the usual necessities for a girl—like chapstick, lip oil, mini sunscreen, perfume, and lotion—I’m struggling to think of additional items I might need.
Do you have any suggestions for what else I should bring along? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
P.S. Thank you all for your helpful tips so far—they’ve been truly appreciated!
Preparing for your first year of college is an exciting time, and having a well-thought-out college bag can make a significant difference in managing your time and responsibilities effectively. It sounds like you’ve got a solid foundation with the essentials, but here are some additional items that might enhance your college experience, especially as a commuter and student-athlete.
Tech Essentials
Portable Charger: Considering you’ll be using devices like your iPad Air and MacBook throughout the day, a high-capacity portable charger can be invaluable. Look for one that offers fast charging capabilities and multiple USB ports to keep all essential devices powered.
Noise-Cancelling Earbuds or Headphones: Perfect for studying in cafes or common areas, these can help you focus better and drown out distractions, especially if you have a busy schedule between classes and sports.
Health and Comfort
Reusable Water Bottle: It’s great that your backpack fits your 40oz Stanley, but having a smaller, lightweight reusable water bottle could come in handy for quick sips during lectures or practice.
First-Aid Kit: A small, travel-sized first-aid kit with essentials like band-aids, pain relievers, and any personal medications can be a lifesaver if you aren’t feeling well between classes or during outings.
Snack Pack: Beyond a lunchbox, consider packing some nutritious snacks like protein bars, trail mix, or dried fruits. These can be a great energy boost between classes or after practice, keeping you fueled throughout your long days on campus.
Organizational Tools
Planner or Digital Organizer App: While you might not be using notebooks, a planner can help keep everything organized—class schedules, assignments, and practice times. If you prefer digital tools, apps like Notion or Todoist can be tailored for your needs and synchronized across devices.
Pencil Pouch: Even if you’re primarily using an Apple Pencil, having a small case for your stylus, charging cable, and any traditional tools (like highlighters or sticky notes) can keep your bag organized and ensure you have everything you need for those spontaneous note-taking moments.
Personal Care
Travel-Sized Umbrella: Given changing weather patterns, having a compact umbrella in your bag can protect you from unexpected downpours, especially as a commuter.
Multi-purpose Makeup/Toiletry Bag: A small bag where you can keep your beauty essentials is great for quick touch-ups throughout the day. You may want to include items like translucent powder, a hairbrush or comb, and a small mirror.
Study Aids
Optional Luxuries
Foldable Tote Bag: Having a foldable tote can be beneficial for carrying extra things you might pick up on campus, whether it’s books from the library, groceries, or sports gear.
Bluetooth Speaker: A portable speaker can elevate your downtime, whether you’re enjoying some music with friends between classes or unwinding after a long study session.
By considering these additional items and tips, you can ensure that your college bag is not only functional but also tailored to support your busy and active lifestyle. This preparation can help you feel confident and in control as you embark on this exciting new chapter. Best of luck in your college journey!
