anyone else classes feal meaningless?

Is anyone else feeling like their classes are pointless? As a high school senior, I’ve noticed that my classes have become so easy that I’ve started skipping school altogether. It’s becoming clear that many classes just waste time. For example, in my theatre class, we simply sit in an auditorium until the bell rings. The same pattern repeats in my other classes, where teachers primarily talk about their lives as if we care.

I often wonder what the point is of going to class when all our assignments are online. Attendance seems irrelevant; it feels like it’s just about getting a number in a grade book. I’ve missed around 30 classes this quarter, yet I’m still passing all my subjects. In my weight training class, you automatically get a 65, which is a passing grade, whether you show up or not. It leads me to question the value of attending class when I could be completing the same work from home.

I think modern schooling is flawed, especially with the impact of technology. Cheating has become so easy since the release of tools like ChatGPT. I use it for nearly every assignment, and yet I’m still managing a 3.4 GPA without truly engaging in my work.

On a different note, I’ve noticed that many students at my school might attend classes but often lack critical thinking skills and common sense. Listening to conversations in my science class, I’m struck by how some students express themselves. It makes me question their ability to think independently. I’ve learned that only about 10-15% of people are truly self-aware, and I see evidence of this more and more in my daily interactions at school. The influence of drugs, like the constant presence of vaping in the bathrooms, seems to add to this lack of critical thinking.

I have no plans to attend college because I worry it will be just as unfulfilling as high school.

  1. It’s really interesting to hear your perspective on this. I think a lot of students feel the same way at different points in their education, especially in high school where the structure can sometimes feel outdated or overly rigid. It sounds like you’re experiencing a disconnect between what you’re learning and how it applies to your interests or future goals.

The ease of access to online resources and tools like ChatGPT has definitely changed the landscape of learning and assessment. In many cases, it can feel like the traditional classroom experience doesn’t match up with the ways we can engage with information outside of it. It also raises important questions about what education is meant to accomplish—is it about simply getting good grades, or is there a deeper purpose in fostering critical thinking and creativity?

As for the social dynamics at school, it can be tough to see peers not engaging meaningfully. You’re definitely not alone in noticing the influence of drugs and other distractions in high school life. It’s great that you’re aware of the importance of free thinking and self-awareness; those are valuable qualities that will serve you well no matter what you choose to do next.

If college feels like it might be more of the same, have you thought about alternative paths that align more closely with your interests? Whether it’s vocational training, internships, or self-directed projects, there are many ways to learn and grow outside of a traditional college setting. It might be worth exploring what excites you and how you can create your own opportunities for learning and personal growth!
