Can your school push back your graduation and make you do summerschool if you failed a non-required course?

Can a school delay your graduation and require you to attend summer school if you fail a non-required course?

To clarify, in my first semester, I had two study halls since I had already earned all my credits. However, the school assigned me to a computer programming class, which I didn’t want or need. I have no knowledge of coding and ended up with a grade of 54%. Since this was an elective I was given against my preference, can they legally hold my graduation back because of it?

I’m planning to reach out to my counselor to see if there was an error, as the school recently sent an email to all students who failed a first-semester course, which may have included those who are actually eligible to graduate.

  1. I’m sorry to hear about the situation you’re facing. It sounds frustrating, especially since you were placed in a class you didn’t want or need. Schools often have policies about graduation requirements that can vary by district and state, so it’s important to understand your specific school’s rules.

Generally, if a course is not required for graduation and you’ve met all the necessary credits, a school typically cannot hold back your graduation just because you failed a non-required class. However, there may be exceptions based on school policies.

Reaching out to your counselor is definitely a good step. They should be able to clarify whether the email you received was a mistake and what the policies are regarding your situation. If you’re still unsure after speaking with them, you might consider discussing it with a parent or guardian who can help advocate on your behalf. Good luck, and I hope it gets resolved quickly!
