College/Scheduling Advice

College and Scheduling Advice

Hi everyone! I’m a 15-year-old high school student aiming to build a strong college transcript. Currently, I’m on the honor roll with a 3.7 unweighted GPA and a variety of extracurriculars under my belt. I’m planning to major in computer science and have mapped out my schedule for sophomore year, which includes several AP classes:

  • AP Physics
  • AP US History
  • Advanced Spanish III
  • IT Early Degree
  • Advanced Chemistry
  • Algebra 2 (leading to Precalculus)
  • AP Literature

(I’ve omitted some required courses, like gym, from this list.)

On the extracurricular side, my teams are having great success, with several of us competing in state tournaments, including Mock Trial.

I still have the chance to boost my GPA—I’m currently in Semester II with a 4.0! My overall GPA dipped to 3.7 due to a B in Advanced Biology.

I’m hoping to maintain my work ethic and wonder what colleges I could potentially get into if I stay on this path. Also, what classes should I consider for junior and senior year to help me achieve my goal of getting into MIT to major in computer science, specifically focusing on cybersecurity or programming? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. It’s great to see your dedication to building a strong college transcript and pursuing your interest in computer science! With your current academic achievements and extracurricular involvement, you’re definitely on the right track. Here are some suggestions for your future planning:

    College Options

    1. MIT: As you’re aiming for MIT, keeping up that strong GPA and excelling in your AP courses will be vital. Make sure to focus on your math and science classes, as they will be crucial for your major.
    2. Other Top Schools: In addition to MIT, consider applying to schools like Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, and Caltech. These institutions have strong computer science programs as well and look for high academic performance and a passion for the field.

    Junior and Senior Year Classes

For junior year, aim to take:
AP Calculus AB/BC: Essential for computer science and highly regarded by colleges.
AP Computer Science A: This will provide a solid foundation in programming.
    – Another AP Science (such as AP Physics C if available or AP Chemistry) will strengthen your application.
    – Continue taking advanced classes in subjects like English and any other courses that align with your interests.

    For senior year:
AP Statistics or Data Science: These are important for computer science.
AP Computer Science Principles: If you haven’t already taken it, this introduces key concepts in CS.
    – Consider taking community college courses in computer science for additional rigor if it fits your schedule.

    Extracurricular Activities

Since you’re already involved in Mock Trial and performing well, consider adding activities that relate more directly to computer science:
    – Join or form a coding club at your school.
    – Participate in hackathons or coding competitions.
    – Pursue internships or summer programs related to tech, cybersecurity, or programming.

    Maintain Balanced Work Ethic

It’s commendable that you’re focused on a high GPA while challenging yourself in AP courses, but remember to maintain a balance to avoid burnout. Make sure to prioritize self-care and manage your time effectively.

    Keep Up the Volunteer Work

Colleges appreciate well-rounded applicants, so look for opportunities to volunteer, especially in activities that may tie into your interests, like tutoring younger students in math or science or developing tech-based solutions for community projects.

    Conclusion

Stay curious and continue exploring different areas of computer science. Your passion will shine through in your applications. By maintaining your GPA and aiming for rigorous coursework, you’ll position yourself well for your college applications. Good luck!
