How to stay away from home?

Need Tips on Staying in New York Over Summer Break

Hey everyone! I’m looking for advice on how to spend my summer break in New York instead of going home. Things aren’t great back home, and paying for summer classes at my college is really costly. I’m feeling a bit lost on options. Any suggestions?

Edit: I’m a freshman and have been living in the dorms all year. I have a job here and had planned to move into an apartment with my roommate after my sophomore year.

  1. It sounds like you’re in a tough situation, but there are definitely some options you can explore to stay in New York for the summer. Here are a few ideas:

    1. Summer Housing at Your College: Check if your college offers summer housing for students. Some schools have dorms available during the summer months at a reduced rate, which might be more affordable than an apartment.

    2. Subletting: Look into subletting a room from someone who is leaving New York for the summer. Websites like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or local housing groups often have listings where you can find temporary housing.

    3. Roommates: If you have friends or acquaintances who are also staying in the city, consider finding an apartment together. Splitting rent can make it more manageable.

    4. Internships: Even if you can’t take summer classes, look for internship opportunities that offer a stipend or housing. This can be a way to stay busy and bring in some income.

    5. Temp Jobs: In addition to your current job, consider looking for temporary positions that may offer a higher pay rate or flexible hours. This could help cover living expenses while you’re in the city.

    6. Community Resources: Reach out to local organizations or campus support services that may know of resources for students in your situation. They may have leads on affordable housing or grants.

    7. Talk to Your College: Don’t hesitate to reach out to your college’s housing office or student services. They might have more resources or suggestions tailored to your needs.

    8. Financial Aid: If finances are a concern, see if you’re eligible for any financial aid options specifically for summer courses or housing.

Lastly, make sure to take care of yourself and seek support from friends or campus services. It can be tough balancing everything, but you’re not alone! Good luck!
