I’m struggling to fulfill my foreign language requirement for my A&S degree. I only need one more semester of Latin to graduate, but I just can’t seem to do it. I usually pick up languages easily at first, but when it comes to integrating everything, I panic. The overwhelming pressure makes it difficult for me to participate, especially since my anxiety kicks in when I know my translations aren’t accurate. This is why I only managed to complete two years of Spanish in high school and two semesters of German in community college instead of sticking with one language. I had to drop this class last year, and I’m facing the same challenges again this year. It feels nearly impossible for me to pass at this point. I can’t wait a whole year to retake it. Is it really going to come down to not getting my Biology degree because of one semester of Latin? It feels so frustrating.

I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed, especially when dealing with language requirements and anxiety. Remember, you’re not alone in this—many people struggle with language classes for various reasons.
Have you considered reaching out to your academic advisor or a counselor? They might be able to suggest alternatives or accommodations, like a different method of assessment or even substituting a different course that can satisfy the requirement.
Also, sometimes working with a tutor or joining a study group can help ease the pressure and break the material into more manageable parts. It might also help to talk to your professor about your struggles. They might have additional resources or strategies that could support you.
Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself; a single class or requirement doesn’t define your abilities or accomplishments. Your passion for biology is what truly matters, and there will always be paths to reach your goals. Hang in there!
