I feel so behind everyone and feel as if I’m not doing what I should be or am not doing enough after hearing the classes my friends take.

I’ve been feeling really behind lately, especially after hearing about the classes my friends are taking. As we’re choosing classes for next year, it seems like everyone is enrolling in all honors courses, whereas I’m only taking honors English and honors French. I can’t help but feel inadequate next to them.

Looking ahead, I’m uncertain about taking honors or AP math, science, and history because I struggle with those subjects. My friends seem so confident, but I worry about my performance. I’m frustrated with myself for not pushing harder and for choosing classes that feel less challenging. It’s on my mind that this might affect my chances of getting scholarships or getting into good colleges since I’m not taking higher-level courses.

I’ve always thought I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field because of its potential for high earnings, but I realize I don’t have much passion for it. That’s what my family wants for me, believing it’s a better path than something like art. I know that studying art might not lead to traditional job opportunities, but it’s something I genuinely enjoy. Lately, even in art, I’ve felt like I’m falling behind, despite it being my passion.

Meanwhile, my siblings are excelling in their pursuits like psychology, computer science, and business—fields that seem to lead to promising careers. I’m stuck feeling like I don’t excel at anything, and sports aren’t my thing either. It’s really weighing on me, and I can’t shake the feeling that I’m disappointing those around me and lagging behind everyone else.

  1. It sounds like you’re feeling really overwhelmed and frustrated right now, and it’s completely understandable. It’s tough when you see your friends and siblings excelling in areas that seem more recognized or valued, especially when you feel pressure to follow a certain path.

First, it’s important to remember that everyone’s journey is unique. Just because your friends are taking honors or AP classes doesn’t mean you’re any less capable or destined for success. You have your own strengths and interests, and it’s okay if they don’t align with what others are doing.

Consider taking a step back and reflecting on what truly matters to you. If you’re interested in art, don’t dismiss that passion! There are countless careers in the creative field that can be fulfilling and lucrative.

As for the college concerns, many institutions value passion and skill over simply taking honors classes. If you can demonstrate commitment and talent in what you love, that can speak volumes in applications.

Lastly, it’s never too late to explore other interests or subjects at your own pace. Give yourself permission to pursue what makes you happy rather than what you think is expected of you. It’s crucial to find a balance between meeting expectations and following your own path. You’re not falling behind; you’re just on a different journey, and that’s perfectly okay.
