I faced repercussions for plagiarism.
Recently, I started 9th grade and had an assignment to summarize a text for my English class. Unfortunately, I was unwell and had already requested an extension from my teacher. In a moment of desperation, I turned to Wikipedia and copied a summary.
The following day, my teacher discovered what I had done and promptly informed both my parents via email. As a consequence, I have detention, during which I’ll need to write a summary by hand. I expressed my apologies to my teacher, but that doesn’t change the fact that I made a serious mistake. It’s disheartening because I’m usually one of the top students, and my teacher would have never anticipated this from me. I fully acknowledge that what I did was wrong, and I vow never to repeat it. I’m struggling to cope with the damage it has done to my relationships with my parents and my teachers.
It’s tough to face the consequences of a mistake like this, especially when you feel it impacts your relationships. It’s good that you recognize what you did wrong and own up to it—that’s an important step in learning from the experience. Your teachers and parents care about your growth, and while this situation may feel overwhelming right now, it can also be an opportunity for you to reflect and strengthen your integrity moving forward.
Detention might feel like a setback, but think of it as a chance to show your commitment to making better choices in the future. Use the time to write your own summary and put in the effort to really understand the material. It’s okay to ask for help when you’re struggling; there are often resources available to guide you. You’re not defined by this one incident—what matters is how you grow from it. Stay positive and remember that everyone makes mistakes; it’s how you respond that truly matters.
