IMSA Application Help

Hi everyone! I’m a middle school student in the GAP program (an advanced program) and I recently applied to IMSA (Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy) but, unfortunately, I was not accepted. I have a strong desire to attend IMSA and I’m looking for ways to make my application stand out in the future. The application asked about my grades, my interest in IMSA, and my experience in STEM fields. Any tips or advice on how to strengthen my application would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your rejection, but the fact that you’re already seeking ways to improve shows great determination! Here are a few tips that might help for your next application:

    1. Strengthen your STEM background: Get involved in more STEM-related activities. Participate in science fairs, join math clubs, or take part in coding competitions. Look for opportunities outside of school as well, like online courses or local workshops.

    2. Excel in your current studies: Focus on maintaining strong grades, particularly in math and science classes. High performance will reflect your commitment and abilities in these areas.

    3. Showcase your unique interests: Think about why you’re passionate about IMSA and how it aligns with your interests. Perhaps you have specific projects, hobbies, or goals that connect to IMSA’s curriculum. Be sure to express this clearly in your application.

    4. Letters of Recommendation: If possible, ask teachers or mentors who know you well to write recommendations. They can provide insights into your character, work ethic, and interest in STEM.

    5. Extracurricular involvement: Join clubs or volunteer programs that focus on STEM or leadership. This can demonstrate your interest and commitment beyond the classroom.

    6. Practice your writing: Since the application involves written responses, practice articulating your thoughts clearly and concisely. Seek feedback from teachers or peers to improve your writing skills.

    7. Seek mentorship: Find a mentor who is already in a STEM field. They can offer guidance, share their experiences, and help you navigate your interests and aspirations.

    8. Stay curious: Continue to explore and learn about topics in STEM that interest you. This curiosity can be a big advantage in your application.

    9. Prepare for interviews: If there’s an interview process, practice discussing your interests and experiences confidently. Mock interviews can help you get comfortable.

    10. Stay positive and persistent: Many successful students experience setbacks along the way. If IMSA is truly where you want to go, keep striving and learning.

Good luck with your future applications! Remember, every experience is a step toward your goals.

Should I take the risk and go to school later tomorrow? I apologize for any mistakes; English isn’t my first language. I’m in 11th grade, which is when we get more freedom at my school.
