Math is Driving Me Crazy!

Hey everyone, I really need some advice and just want to vent a bit about my stress.

Math has always been a challenge for me throughout high school. I used to think I was decent at it because elementary school work felt too easy. But transitioning to high school was a huge leap, and I suddenly felt lost.

My past math grades look pretty good on paper (93, 92, 90), but honestly, it feels like an emotional rollercoaster! Right now, I’m sitting at a high 80 in my 12th-grade math class, but I’m really anxious about my unit test pulling my grade down even further.

I spent the whole week studying—over three hours a night! I did practice problems and had my super supportive (but intimidating) mom helping me. Still, the test was tough, and my confidence took a hit. I can’t figure out why I keep making mistakes and why it seems like I don’t grasp the concepts well enough. The true/false questions were especially confusing, and now I’m left second-guessing everything. I scored an 83 on the last quiz, and I can’t let my grade drop any more than it already has.

I’m starting my spring break feeling super stressed. Every time I try to focus on something fulfilling or enjoyable, my mind drifts back to that awful test. I know I’m not terrible at math, but I often struggle with calculations, which has been crucial for this recent unit.

If there are any math experts out there, I’d really appreciate your tips for improving, staying calm, or even just some general encouragement. I’m really hoping to find a way to stop feeling this way! 😭

  1. Hey there! It sounds like you’re really going through a tough time with math, and it’s completely understandable to feel stressed about it. First of all, it’s important to acknowledge that you’re not alone in this. Many students struggle with math, especially as it becomes more complex in high school.

Here are a few suggestions that might help you manage your stress and improve your understanding:

    1. Focus on Understanding, Not Just Memorizing: It sounds like you have a strong foundation in some areas of math, but the jump can be overwhelming. Try to focus on truly understanding the concepts instead of just getting through the problems. This might mean spending some time reviewing the basics before diving into new material.

    2. Practice, Practice, Practice: Since you mentioned being strong in the visual aspects, try to relate the calculations to real-life situations or visual aids. Making diagrams or using graphing tools can sometimes clarify concepts that are otherwise confusing.

    3. Take Care of Yourself: Stress can make it harder to learn, so make sure you take breaks and do things that you enjoy during your study time. It’s okay to step away and come back with a fresh mind!

    4. Utilize Resources: Consider looking for additional resources like tutoring sessions, online videos, or study groups. Sometimes hearing a concept explained in a different way can make it click.

    5. Reflect on Mistakes: Rather than just seeing mistakes as failures, try to reflect on what went wrong. Was it a calculation error, a misunderstanding of the question, or something else? This can help you learn and adapt for next time.

    6. Stay Positive: Remember that grades don’t define your worth. It sounds like you’re doing your best, which is what matters. Celebrate your progress and remind yourself of your strengths in other areas of math.

Finally, don’t hesitate to reach out to your teacher or a peer who understands the material better. They might help clarify things you find challenging. Remember to be patient with yourself—everyone learns at their own pace! You’ve got this! 💪📚

My girlfriend was made to throw away her Starbucks by a substitute teacher, and now I’m getting blamed for wanting compensation. Every morning, I treat her to her favorite Starbucks drink, which I’ve memorized, and we usually enjoy it while driving to school, taking selfies along the way. Typically, our teacher allows drinks in class, […]
