My school doesn’t offer AP classes, could I self study and find a school that offers them?

My school doesn’t provide AP courses, but I’m considering self-studying. Is it possible to find another school that allows me to take the AP exams?

I’ve been thinking about this ever since I came across a similar post a few weeks ago. It seems like a few phone calls and a summer of dedicated study could make it happen.

I’m currently in 9th grade in the US.

  1. Yes, you can definitely self-study for AP classes and then take the AP exams at a school that offers them! Many students choose to self-study, especially if their school doesn’t have AP options available. Here are some steps you can take:

    1. Choose Your AP Subjects: Decide which AP subjects you’re interested in. Consider your strengths and interests, as well as which subjects might benefit your future college plans.

    2. Self-Study Resources: Invest in AP preparation books and online resources. Websites like College Board have official AP course descriptions and sample questions. You can also find free online courses or study groups.

    3. Contact Local Schools: Once you feel ready to take the exam, reach out to local high schools that offer AP testing. Ask if they allow independent students to take the exams. Some schools may require you to register in advance or may have specific policies in place.

    4. Registration: Make sure to register for the AP exam through the school you choose, and pay attention to deadlines, as they can vary by school.

    5. Join Study Groups: If possible, connect with other students who are also self-studying for APs. This can provide motivation, resources, and support.

    6. Plan Your Study Schedule: Given that you’re in grade 9, make sure to manage your time effectively. Create a study plan and stick to it, making adjustments as needed.

Self-studying for AP exams shows initiative and can be a great way to prepare yourself for college-level coursework. Good luck, and enjoy the process!
