My Teacher Confisicated My Scissors

My Teacher Took Away My Scissors

Hey everyone,

Today was quite the experience at school. As one of the most well-liked students among both teachers and classmates, I was heading to recess when I realized I forgot to put my scissors away.

I was holding them carefully, with the tips tucked securely in my hand, as I walked out the door. Then, I heard one of the strictest teachers call my name. When I approached her, she asked why I had scissors in my hands, which is, I guess, a typical question for teachers to ask.

I replied, “Oh, sorry! I forgot to put them away.” She then told me that if I handed them over, she’d return them to my class. I shrugged it off and continued with my day.

After recess, I went to her classroom to retrieve my scissors. She asked if I needed them for my next class. I explained that I did, as my next class was art-related.

She accompanied me back to my classroom and informed both my French teacher and my homeroom teacher that I had been acting suspiciously with scissors outside. My French teacher started to say, “We probably won’t need scissors as it’s French—” but she was quickly interrupted by the mean teacher, who announced to the class that I could discuss my scissors with the principal and school staff later.

My homeroom teacher suddenly looked at me differently and questioned why I still had the scissors when she had instructed everyone to put them away. For context, my friend had been using them, and since they were mine and the bell had just rung, that’s how they ended up in my hands.

At the end of the day, I went to the office and inquired with the secretary, principal, and other staff members about my scissors, but no one had any information. I then had to track down the strict teacher. In front of two other teachers, she asked if I planned to do arts and crafts today. I answered, “Maybe.” She replied that she didn’t believe me anymore and that I could talk to her tomorrow morning.

Every time we spoke, she used a sarcastic tone or seemed outright rude.

Does anyone know if this is legally permissible, and if so, what law might apply? Is there anything I can do about it? With March Break starting tomorrow, I worry this issue will continue.

She referred to the scissors as “dangerous weapons,” despite the fact that I wasn’t pointing them at anyone or intending to harm anyone. Plus, they’re just pink safety scissors intended for kids aged 5-8!

Honestly, if she had just given me a warning, that would have sufficed. It’s baffling that she escalated this situation over an honest mistake.

Apologies for any grammar errors!

  1. It sounds like you had a really frustrating experience with that teacher! Getting your belongings confiscated, especially when you were not using them inappropriately, can feel really unfair. From what you’ve described, it seems like a misunderstanding escalated way more than it should have.

While I’m not a legal expert, school policies often allow teachers to confiscate items that they believe could pose a risk to safety. However, it sounds like there should be some common sense applied here, especially since safety scissors for young kids are typically considered safe.

If you feel comfortable, it might be worth discussing the situation with your parents or another teacher you trust to get their perspective on how to address it further. They could help advocate for you and provide support in resolving the misunderstanding. Remember, it’s important to communicate calmly and clearly about how you feel, as that can help your teachers understand your side of the story.

Good luck, and I hope you can get your scissors back without any more hassle!
