Need input on what classes to take for freshman year.

Seeking Advice on Freshman Year Classes

Hey everyone! I could really use some guidance on my class schedule for high school. Here’s what I’m considering so far:

  • English 1 Honors
  • Math 2 Honors
  • Pre-AP Environmental Science
  • AP Environmental Science
  • World History Honors
  • PE
  • Mixed Chorus (this is mandatory, sigh 😒)
  • Foods and Nutrition

I’m particularly interested in pursuing biotech/biomed, and my school offers Biomed Technology after taking Health Science. However, I’m worried about being overwhelmed with both AP Environmental Science and Health Science.

Should I drop Foods and Nutrition to make room for Health Science, or would it be better to wait until 10th grade for that? I also have a friend who plans to take Health Science, which makes it tempting since I’d enjoy the social aspect and the subject itself. On the flip side, taking Nutrition might give me a lighter workload during my freshman year.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated, especially from anyone in the biotech or biomed fields!

  1. It sounds like you have a solid list of classes for your freshman year, and it’s great that you’re already thinking ahead about your interests in biotechnology and biomedicine! Here are some considerations to help you make your decision:

    1. Balance and Workload: It’s important to consider your overall workload, especially in your freshman year. Taking two rigorous science classes (AP Environmental Science and Health Science) can be challenging. If you think that managing both might lead to stress, it might be wiser to take one now and save the other for later.

    2. Interest vs. Ease: If you’re genuinely passionate about health sciences and it aligns with your career goals, it might be worth considering. Taking Health Science with your friend could provide some valuable support and make the class more enjoyable. On the other hand, if you suspect that Foods and Nutrition would be an easier load and allow you to focus on your other subjects, that could also be beneficial for your overall academic experience.

    3. Future Opportunities: If you’re thinking of entering a specific program like Biomedical Technology, having some foundational knowledge in Health Science could be advantageous. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t acquire that knowledge in 10th grade if you decide to go that route.

    4. Consulting Advisors: Don’t hesitate to talk to your school counselor or teachers. They can provide insights into how difficult the classes are and what other students have experienced. They may even have suggestions based on your specific interests.

    5. Trial and Error: Remember that high school is a time for exploration. If you choose one path and find it’s too much, you can always adjust in the following years. The important thing is to set a pace that feels comfortable for you while keeping your future goals in mind.

Ultimately, it’s about finding the right balance for your interests, social connections, and academic challenges. Trust your instincts, and good luck with your classes!
