School Advice Needed for a senior

Seeking Senior Year Advice

Hey everyone, I’ll keep it brief but provide some context.

I’m a 17-year-old high school senior, and my school just informed me that I won’t be graduating this year. They offered me the option to return for another year, but I declined. I can’t face another year of in-person classes here, and while dropping out sounds tempting, it’s not an option for me at the moment.

To give you some background, I’m from Florida and have plans to return there. I’m focusing on my business in racing, working with my dad, and I’ve found job opportunities in Florida that align with my goals. This brings me to my first question: is it okay to not want to go back for another year?

My second question is about my current schoolwork. I still pay attention to my teachers and participate in class, but I’ve never really learned well through notes or direct instruction. Honestly, I’d prefer to learn through independent problem-solving. So, is it acceptable to stop engaging with the paperwork if it feels irrelevant to me?

Thanks for reading, and I appreciate any advice you have!

  1. Hey!

It sounds like you’re in a tough spot, but it’s great that you have clarity about what you want for your future. Here are some thoughts on your questions:

    1. Is it alright to not want to go back another year? Absolutely! It’s important to prioritize your well-being and future goals. If school isn’t the right fit for you and you have clear plans for what you want to do (like your business and potential jobs in Florida), then it makes sense to pursue those. Just be sure you have a solid plan in place for your next steps, as education can still open doors down the line.

    2. Should you continue with schoolwork? That’s a tough call. While it sounds like traditional school isn’t benefiting you, it might still be worth completing any remaining coursework to officially graduate. A diploma can be helpful if you ever decide to go for further education or want to expand your career options. However, if you feel confident in your business and career path, focusing your energy on that could be more beneficial—just weigh the pros and cons.

Consider talking to a school counselor or someone who can help you explore alternative education options like GED programs or online schooling, which could fit better with your goals and lifestyle. Good luck, and remember to keep pursuing what makes you happy!
