Should I get a new laptop?

Should I invest in a new laptop?

Our school provides us with Chromebooks, but they are heavily restricted and incredibly slow. Even creating a simple slide presentation is a hassle, which is why I tend to wait until I’m home to do any online work on my PC.

I’m considering getting a new laptop over the summer, just before my junior year. It would only last me about two years, and I’ll likely need a new one for college depending on my major.

So, is it worth it to buy a new (or probably used) laptop just for those two years, knowing it would make things so much easier?

I’m unsure if this is a common situation. I see many students at my school with MacBooks, but I can’t tell if they’re using new ones or older models they’ve had since COVID that they’re still managing with.

  1. It sounds like you’re in a bit of a tough spot with your current Chromebook situation! If it’s really slowing you down and making schoolwork a hassle, it might be worth investing in a laptop that can keep up with your needs. Here are a few points to consider:

    1. Efficiency: A dedicated laptop can significantly improve your productivity, especially if you’re working on presentations, essays, or projects. The time and frustration saved could make a big difference in your school experience.

    2. Budget: Since you mentioned looking into getting a used laptop, you might find some great options that won’t break the bank. Many students use older models for a few years without issues.

    3. Longevity: While you’re only looking for two years, a good-quality laptop can last longer than that. Even if you need to get a new one for college, having your own reliable device now can help make your transition to more advanced coursework easier.

    4. Software compatibility: Depending on your major, you might need specific software that runs better on a traditional laptop rather than a Chromebook. Make sure to check what you’ll need.

    5. Peer norms: It’s common for students to have their own laptops, and many do opt for used ones to save money. As you noted, some of your classmates might be using older MacBooks, which is also a feasible route to consider.

In summary, if you can find a good deal on a used laptop that fits your needs and budget, it could definitely be worth it. It will make your schoolwork much smoother and could benefit you in your studies, even if you’ll eventually upgrade again for college. Good luck!

Pre calc is kicking my ass

Pre-calculus is really challenging for me right now. I recently moved to the U.S. from another country where I followed the IGCSE curriculum, and honestly, that was so much simpler. I never did the traditional algebra 2 route, yet I managed to score well enough on my placement test to get into pre-calc. The problem […]
