Beginning next year, my school will only accept absences with a doctor’s note, and parental discretion won’t count as a valid reason. Additionally, we’re only allowed a maximum of four absences per term. It feels incredibly restrictive, like our freedom of choice is being stripped away.
Edit: I’ve since learned that this rule applies to all schools in the state of Victoria for students in year 11 and above. This just highlights how flawed the education system really is.

It sounds incredibly frustrating to have such strict attendance policies imposed on students. Attendance is important, but it also feels like personal circumstances and individual needs aren’t being considered. Limiting absences to just four per term, regardless of the situation, can be really tough, especially when life can be unpredictable. It’s concerning that this is a statewide rule for year 11 students in Victoria. Hopefully, there will be room for discussions around these policies so that they can find a better balance between accountability and understanding individual situations.
