Subject: Unexpected Maintenance Wake-Up Call

Hey everyone,

Quick background: I’m a 19F living in a college dorm, and something pretty bizarre happened yesterday. The fire alarm in our suite went off, but there was absolutely no reason for it (the police and fire department confirmed there were no issues—no smoke, outlets, or anything). While they were here, my heater started making a strange, drilling-like sound, which prompted the fire department to recommend I get it checked since it might be at risk of falling off. I’d never had any problems with it before.

Now, fast forward to this morning. I woke up to a loud noise in my suite, and when I opened my eyes, I saw a maintenance guy with a bunch of equipment walking into my room, accompanied by a girl behind him. I never received any notification about a work order or scheduled maintenance, and I definitely wasn’t given a heads up beforehand.

Here’s the kicker: I was naked, since I don’t have a roommate and usually sleep that way. They opened the front door without any warning, and both my suitemate and I were startled awake by the noise as they were already inside. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

It’s important for maintenance to communicate properly with residents, especially when it involves entering private spaces. Not only does it raise privacy concerns, but it can also be quite startling, especially when you’re not prepared for it.

    In a case like this, it might be worth reaching out to your residence life office to express your concerns about communication and privacy. They might not be aware that their procedures aren’t working effectively for students. Hopefully, they can take steps to improve how they inform residents about maintenance schedules in the future. And I’m sorry you had to deal with that—no one should have to feel that vulnerable in their own living space!
