Why do I struggle so much with art?
Even though art has always been my strongest subject, I’ve had a difficult time since I started taking art classes in high school. I’ve even been placed in AP 2D Art because of my skills, but my grades don’t reflect that. I’m currently a senior, maintaining straight A’s in my classes, yet I have an F in AP Art. I just can’t seem to complete the portfolio—I find it overwhelming to spend so much time perfecting one prompt or theme. My pieces don’t feel cohesive, either.
It seems like photography students have it easier, but I’m not interested in that. I just wish I could take a regular art class that focuses on the basics like figure drawing. This isn’t what I wanted. It feels like if you don’t have good time management, you’re bound to fail. My teacher is really laid-back, but I’m struggling. I thought this would be the year I finally excelled in art.
It sounds like you’re really struggling with the expectations of AP art, and that’s totally okay to feel that way. It’s important to remember that just because you have a talent for art doesn’t mean you have to excel in every aspect of it, especially under such pressure. The shift from creating art for personal enjoyment to fulfilling specific prompts and themes can be overwhelming, and it’s normal for that to affect your grades.
It might help to focus on your artistic process rather than the end result for a moment. Give yourself permission to explore and develop your ideas without the pressure to make every piece feel connected. Sometimes, creativity can thrive in a less structured environment.
Also, consider talking to your teacher about how you’re feeling. They might have suggestions on how to approach the portfolio in a way that feels more manageable or be able to provide additional support or resources for you.
Remember that art is a journey, and it’s okay to not have everything figured out. It’s also okay to want to focus on the fundamentals like figure drawing. Maybe you could supplement your AP class with some personal practice in that area. You’re not alone in feeling this way, and it’s completely valid to want to enjoy art without all the added pressure. Hang in there!
