College put me in wrong program, advisor says my credits are in “the wrong place”

College Mix-Up: Credits in the Wrong Program

Hello everyone,

I’m currently facing a bit of a challenge with my college situation. I’m enrolled in a bachelor’s program at my local community college, and this is my first semester back after completing my AA in 2020.

Unfortunately, this college has had its fair share of issues, but it’s the most affordable and convenient option for me, so I decided to continue my education here, paying out of pocket.

When I first signed up for the bachelor’s program, I registered as a non-degree seeking student and then transferred into one of the available programs. During my initial phone call with an advisor, I mistakenly received the code for the wrong program.

The next day, I called back to get switched to my intended program. Currently, I’m taking four classes, but I had to change my program again since the one I wanted wasn’t fully online as I had initially thought. The new program I switched to is offered online.

Now, as I prepare for the upcoming semester, my advisor mentioned that I still need six lower-level classes, despite the fact that I’m currently enrolled in four. She was puzzled when she discovered that my credits are being allocated to various programs.

Upon checking my “academic progress” in the school system, I found that one class is counted toward my intended program, one is assigned to the wrong program from my initial misstep, and another is under the different program I briefly considered. It seems like none of my accomplishments are being accurately reflected.

My advisor said she would keep my file prioritized, but I’m worried this could cause issues later on. I’m still attending classes and meeting all the requirements, but they aren’t correctly documented yet.

Is it possible for me to continue taking my classes while getting everything properly transferred to the correct program? I’m concerned that this mix-up might lead to complications down the road. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. It sounds like you’re in a frustrating situation, but it seems like you’re on top of it by communicating with your advisor. Here are a few steps you can take to help resolve this issue:

    1. Stay in Communication with Your Advisor: Keep an open line of communication with your advisor. Make sure they understand the urgency of getting your credits sorted out, especially since you are currently enrolled in classes.

    2. Document Everything: Keep a record of any conversations you have, including dates, times, and what was discussed. This will be helpful if you need to reference your conversations later.

    3. Follow Up Regularly: Don’t hesitate to follow up with your advisor about the progress of fixing your academic record. It’s important to stay proactive in ensuring that your credits are assigned correctly.

    4. Check Your University’s Policies: Some schools have policies in place for correcting academic records. Familiarize yourself with these policies in case you need to escalate the issue.

    5. Seek Additional Help: If your advisor isn’t able to resolve the issue or you’re still feeling uneasy, consider reaching out to the department head or the registrar’s office for further assistance.

    6. Keep Taking Classes: As long as your advisor has indicated that you can continue, keep taking your classes while the discrepancy is being resolved. Just ensure to double-check that those classes will count towards your new program.

    7. Ask About Future Implications: Don’t hesitate to ask your advisor directly if they foresee any problems with your academic progress or graduation timeline due to the current mix-up.

It’s great that you’re advocating for yourself and making sure everything is in order. Hopefully, this will get resolved soon and you can focus on your studies! Good luck!
