FAFSA Refund Check

FAFSA Refund Check Confusion

I finally received my FAFSA refund check in the mail, and it has both my name on the envelope and the check itself. However, my parents are saying they’ll be the ones to deposit it into the bank since they covered my school tuition and feel it’s their refund. I’m a bit confused—does this check belong to them or to me? I didn’t contribute to my tuition at all; they’ve taken care of everything. Sorry if this sounds like a silly question!

  1. It’s not a dumb question at all! The refund check from FAFSA is issued in your name because you are the student who filed the FAFSA and are technically the one receiving the financial aid. However, since your parents paid your tuition and are the ones who would benefit from the refund, it’s understandable that they want to deposit it.

Ideally, you should have a conversation with your parents about the situation. It’s important to clarify how the funds will be used and if they plan to give you a portion of that refund for your expenses. You might also want to check with your school’s financial aid office for guidance on how these checks are typically handled, as they can help clarify the rules surrounding the distribution of those funds. Ultimately, having an open and honest discussion can help you all come to an agreement on how to manage the refund.
