I can’t complete my foreign language requirement (A&S)

I’m struggling to fulfill my foreign language requirement (A&S). I only need one more semester of Latin to graduate, but I just can’t manage it. I typically start off strong with languages, but when it’s time to put everything together, I get overwhelmed. My anxiety makes it hard for me to participate, especially when I feel like my translations are completely off. Because of this, I only took two years of Spanish in high school and then switched to two semesters of German at community college instead of sticking with one language. I had to drop this class last year, and it’s looking like I’m going to have to do the same this year. Passing seems nearly impossible at this point, and I can’t bear the thought of waiting a whole year to try again. Is it really going to come down to me not getting my Biology degree because of one semester of Latin? It’s incredibly frustrating.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed, especially with such a challenging requirement. Remember, you’re definitely not alone in this struggle—many students find language classes particularly tough, regardless of their skills.

Have you considered reaching out to your professor or academic advisor? They might be able to offer some accommodations, resources, or alternative options to help you meet the requirement without compromising your well-being. There may also be tutoring services or language learning centers at your school that could provide additional support.

Don’t be too hard on yourself; overcoming anxiety takes time, and it’s not a reflection of your abilities or worth. Focus on the progress you’ve made, and keep seeking support. You deserve to get your degree, and there may be a way to make this work without delaying your graduation. You’ve got this!
