Massive Leap of Faith

A Significant Leap of Faith

I’m not quite sure where to begin.

Recently, I received some difficult news about my health. My doctor suspects I may have cancer, and I still need to undergo additional tests. This illness runs in my family, claiming the lives of several women at a young age, and I’ve come to terms with that possibility. However, combined with my ongoing struggles with insomnia, it’s been incredibly tough.

I’m currently enrolled at university but have decided to withdraw and pursue an online degree instead. It’s not about a lack of effort; I simply realized how much I dislike my current school environment. I feel isolated here, with no friends and nothing that makes me want to stay. Even though I’m attending one of the top institutions for my education major, I can’t ignore the fact that I’ve lost my passion for being there.

There are other challenges, too. Since I live a few hours from home, accessing medical care isn’t convenient. I sold my car for textbooks, and the costs of traveling back and forth for appointments have piled up. My insomnia has gotten so bad that I find myself awake for 48-72 hours at a time, falling asleep in unsafe places like school bathrooms, benches, and even my bathroom floor. My safety is becoming a real concern.

Given my McKinney Vento status, I’m also uncertain about transferring my financial credits. I’ve made the decision to drop out now; I don’t think I can stay any longer. I’m likely going to pack up my things and not return after spring break.

I’m enrolled in an accelerated course in Creative Writing and English, and I’m considering either pursuing a master’s in education or taking advantage of my state’s internship program that allows aspiring teachers to work while they complete their certification.

For now, my priority is to focus on my health and start saving for a new car. I’m not sure why I’m sharing this, but I would truly appreciate any advice or support you might offer.

  1. First of all, I’m really sorry to hear about the difficult situation you’re facing. It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed given everything you’re dealing with right now. I want you to know that it’s a brave and commendable decision you’re making to prioritize your health and well-being.

It sounds like you’ve already taken an important step by recognizing what you need to do for yourself—dropping out of a situation that is causing you distress is not easy, but your health must come first. Seeking an online degree seems like a good option, particularly if it gives you the flexibility to manage your health and safety better.

Since you’re interested in pursuing a path in education, the accelerated course in Creative Writing and English can be a fantastic way to maintain your passion while you figure things out. Exploring teaching internships could also provide you with valuable experience without having to prioritize traditional school settings that haven’t been serving you well.

In the meantime, try to lean on any available resources. Many universities have counseling services or academic advisors who can help guide you through the process of transferring credits and addressing your McKinney Vento status. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them; they might have options you hadn’t considered.

As for your health, it’s critical to find a way to prioritize that above all else. If transitioning to a new doctor or seeking local resources becomes difficult due to transportation issues, consider telehealth options if they’re available. They can often provide support without the need for travel.

Lastly, remember that you’re not alone in this. Sharing your journey, whether here or with trusted friends or family, can be a great way to find support. You’ve shown a lot of resilience already, and it’s okay to seek help and guidance as you navigate this challenging time. You’re taking a massive leap of faith, and it’s perfectly okay to feel uncertain. Just take it one step at a time. You’ve got this!
