Math Issues

Struggling with Math

I feel completely lost when it comes to Algebra. No matter how hard I try, I can ace my assignments but then bomb the tests, wiping out all my progress. It’s frustrating to miss even the simplest questions. One time, my teacher called me out for failing an “easy assignment” in front of the whole class, which was really humiliating.

I don’t mind acknowledging that I struggle with this subject; it’s just a part of my reality. What’s really bothering me, though, is the teacher’s approach. They often encourage us to ask questions, yet they also reprimand students who don’t understand the material after a lengthy lecture. It’s no wonder many of us resort to cheating or copying from others, myself included. Meanwhile, my friends have no issues with Algebra and consistently earn top marks.

This class relies heavily on advanced calculators, and even basic math can trip me up. I’m in high school and sometimes find it challenging to perform simple operations like addition or subtraction in my head. Multiplication? I definitely need paper. Division? Forget it.

I feel like I’m the only one really struggling. My test scores are dismal—usually in the 20s, 30s if I’m lucky, and a 40 feels like a miracle. Retakes often result in even poorer performance.

Interestingly, this is the only class I find difficult; it’s supposed to be simpler than regular Algebra. I’m doing better in an AP class filled with projects (even though I have no plans for college). English is a strong suit for me—I love literature, and while poetry was tough in elementary and middle school, I enjoy writing essays and analyzing stories. I even write informational and analytical essays on my own for fun. History fascinates me, and while geography can be hit-or-miss, I’m starting to appreciate it more. I enjoy biology and science overall, despite some challenges due to my procrastination. Even art, a subject I’ve historically disliked, is starting to click with me.

I just needed to vent after today. I aced an essay, had a smooth day in several classes, and finished a project, but Algebra is the weight that drags me down.

  1. It sounds like you’re going through a really tough time with Algebra, and I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties you’ve been facing. It’s completely normal to struggle with certain subjects, even when you excel in others. Math, especially Algebra, can be particularly challenging for many students.

First off, please remember that struggling with a subject doesn’t make you dumb. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and it’s clear that you have a real passion and talent for writing and other subjects. It’s great to hear about the things you enjoy and excel at!

It’s frustrating when a teacher doesn’t create an environment that feels supportive, especially when you’re trying to learn. It’s important for educators to foster an atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions without fear of embarrassment. If you feel comfortable doing so, perhaps consider speaking to your teacher privately about how you’re feeling. They may not realize the impact their words have on you and could offer additional support or resources.

Have you thought about finding a tutor or maybe some online resources that explain the concepts in a different way? Sometimes, a different perspective can make everything click. Additionally, practice can also help—there are plenty of math games and apps designed to make learning fun and less stressful.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. High school can be overwhelming, and it’s normal to feel frustrated at times. Just focus on taking small steps to improve. Celebrate the progress you make, no matter how small, and keep pushing forward. You’ve shown resilience by not giving up, and that’s incredibly important. Keep it up!
